When it was
published in 1997, The Corner was immediately recognized
as a rare introduction to real people living in the insular drug
world defined by the corner of West Fayette Street and Mount Street
in West Baltimore. "An amazingly intimate, detailed work of reporting
that makes human and vivid a world that outsiders ordinarily are
forced to learn about through statistics, soundbites, and stereotypes,"
wrote author Nicholas Lemann. Newsweek praised; "One leaves this
book with a voyeurs sense of having witnessed lives in depraved
and desperate states." The Corner, written by David Simon and Edward
Burns, was a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 1997 and
a Booklist Editor's Choice selection for 1997.
The Corner is
now a six-part HBO series that was excutive produced by David Simon
and directed by Charles Dutton, and has been universally praised.
With the support of HBO, we are offering a free screening of Episode
4, which will air on May 7th.
Tidbit:
"You can hold back from the suffering of the world. You have free
permission to do so and it is in accordance with your nature. But
perhaps this very holding back is the one suffering you could have
avoided." -Kafka
