An extraordinary
first feature, Panic explores the mid-life crisis of its central
character Alex (William H. Macy), with all its unusual twists. Alex
is torn by all the forces of his mid-40s life. Exhausted, he is
trying to fit all his life's pieces together at once. He tries to
please a dominating father (Donald Sutherland) who demands his son
fulfill the obligations of a tough career. He has to confront his
attraction to a young woman he has just met (Neve Campbell). And
he wants to be a good husband to his loyal wife (Tracy Ullman) and
be worthy of his adoring young son.
As writer and
director, Henry Bromell has woven a darkly funny tale that finds
new insight in familiar ground. He has written wonderful scenes
about family dynamics that feel totally believable in almost surrealistic
settings. He has drawn top performances from his unusual cast, and
has created a work of great humanity.
