From
garbage man to rock star to Senatorial candidate, Joshua Tunick's
Mr. Smithereens Goes to Washington gives a fascinating
look into the political campaign of Pat DiNizio, lead singer
and songwriter of The Smithereens.
In
2000, DiNizio became a third party candidate challenging republican
Congressman Bob Franks and democratic multi-millionaire Jon
Corzine for a Senate seat from New Jersey. His campaign as
an independent and a member of the Reform Party gives an insight
into the dichotomy of politics. His $50,000 war chest vs.
the $80 million reportedly spent by Corzine; his rag-tag group
of volunteers against professional political operatives; a
"rock and roller" running on the same ticket as Pat Buchanan;
and well-coifed, sound bite proficient politicians vs. the
baseball cap wearing, guitar carrying, guy next door.
Tunick's
film follows DiNizio's campaign and his "Living Room Concert
Tour" from the day he filed his petition to place his name
on the ballot, until the final tally on election night.
If
you have any interest in the political system, or like music
from the 80's, you will enjoy watching Pat DiNizio attempt
to "blow 'politics as usual' to smithereens."
