Set in 1967, middle-aged trumpet player Burt, who fancies himself a happening bebop jazz musician, pays the bills with his day job as a session musician in an easy listening orchestra. He is a miserable klutz, too clumsy to carry out his hollow attempts to end it all.

Enter Linda, a fresh-faced flautist with a passion for instrumental pop, and the newest member of the orchestra. Though half his age, and helplessly unhip, she is impressed with Burt. Not his beatnick lingo or wanna-be jazz man persona. No, she is genuinely turned on by his trumpet playing.

She explains to him that some souls are round and some souls are square. Taking a roll in the grass, she embarks upon the project of helping Burt get in touch with his inner square.
