When a group of citizen artists looked around their neighborhood-
a classic Baltimore neighborhood called Patterson Park - they
decided to create something that would embrace the quality
of the neighborhood and add spirit. With the help of Megan
Hamilton and the team at the Creative Alliance, a local arts
empowerment organization, the logistics started to fall into
place. The idea for a water ballet emerged, and for the last
several summers the Patterson Park Pool has been the site
of Fluid Movement's shows, to the delight of audiences throughout
the region.
A work in progress documentary, the filmmakers have followed
the process of one production, the 2001 extravaganza, Cirque
de L'Amour. Like each of their water ballets, Cirque... has
an idiosyncratic exuberance that is pure Baltimore and pure
art. The cast and crew, while talented in many different ways,
is put together from people who get the spirit of the whole
enterprise. They throw themselves into the effort, and, while
paying homage to the great Esther Williams movies, carve a
whole artistic niche for themselves.
Part of the proceeds from this special screening will go
toward Fluid Movement's next production.
