Berlin, at the height of Germany's rebellious punk rock movement:
Seventeen-year-old Nele is a West Berlin teenager born and
raised with the ever-present Iron Curtain that separates her
world from the grey and empty other side of the Wall. Love
at first site changes her outlook, when she meets Captain,
the leader of a gang of punk rockers from East Berlin. Their
friends and families are against their relationship, but the
biggest threat comes from the Stasi (Secret Service) who are
intent on squashing the subversive punk rock movement. When
a raid results in Captain's arrest and Nele's expulsion from
East Berlin, the separation puts their relationship in further
jeopardy. But Nele is determined not to let the circumstances
get in the way of love.
Never Mind the Wall is more than just a love story set within
a foreign film. It is a nostalgic look at a time when "the
establishment" still felt threatened by the new punk rock
movement, long before the music and styles were co-opted by
Top 40 radio, corporate fashion chains, and mainstream media
in general (who rarely portray the movement with any accuracy).
