Owned gives the viewer a glimpse into the elusive world of computer hacking. Tracing the history from the phone phreakers of the 1960s through the modern day computer hackers, it provides a face and a voice to the hacker handles and shows a diversity in the hacker community. We watch as a stereotypical hacker sits at his computer and hijacks web pages and also visit the Defcon convention in Las Vegas as hundreds of hackers gather to exchange information.

Interviews with notable figures in the hacking world, such as Kevin Mitnick (dubbed "The FBI's Most Wanted Cybercriminal" by the New York Times); John Draper, aka Capn' Crunch (who built the first blue box to manipulate the phone system in the 1970s); and Jon Johansen (who at 16 reverse engineered the encryption for DVD players making it possible to copy DVDs) give insight into the motivations and attitudes of the hackers. We also hear from law officers whose job it is to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes as well as those who work in the internet security industry who try to protect systems from the hackers.

In a world where information is so vital and we are so connected electronically, it is crucial to take a look into this world that is usually hidden behind the computer screen. It is a world that anyone with a computer should be aware of.
