A charming and skillfully told story of a straight-laced young French man who eagerly goes to Barcelona on a European exchange program called Erasmus. He finds an apartment to share with other students from Europe and has to adjust for the first time to the logistical and romantic strains of living in a group. The film features a wonderful cast including Audrey Tatou (Amelie) and newcomer Cécile De France (winner of France’s César and Lumiere Most Promising Actress awards). L’Auberge Espagnole does something very well that looks easy, but is seldom accomplished, which is to create a romantic comedy with genuine charm. Although it hasn’t opened yet in North America, L’Auberge Espagnole has played to great acclaim at a variety of European film festivals, and was nominated for six César Awards in France.
