Faith-based programs from Alcoholics Anonymous to Catholic Charities have been functioning for years. Other community programs like the Enterprise Foundation’s Sandtown-Winchester projects in Baltimore, work intricately with religious groups in their community. The debate about how much government support they should get is new, thanks to the Bush administration. This film follows three examples of faith-based programs, with varying degrees of overt religious components, and lets the viewer decide what might be appropriate public policy alongside our fundamental commitment to separation of church and state. With Phylicia Rashad providing voice-over narration, this film gives case studies, not speculation, about an issue very much on our national agenda. God and the Inner City will air nationally on PBS later in the year.
