Since the Maryland Film Festival’s first Writing in 2 Media panel in 1999 we have explored the specific frustrations and insights of making a movie from source material- newspapers, fiction and nonfiction books, et. al. Movies from other source material make up a significant part of our movie heritage, but the process is mysterious. The particular stories from our panels vary, but the theme that has emerged is that movies are a different art form than the printed word, and getting from one to the other is not easy. Worse yet, it seems as though it should be easy.

This screening gives our audience a unique opportunity in this series: experience a movie with the author of the book that inspired it, who will be seeing it for the first time. Madison Smartt Bell’s celebrated novel, Doctor Sleep, has all the elements of a great movie- it’s been described as a thriller structured as a prayer. By all accounts the movie collaboration was friendly and open; the author joined the movie crew during part of the filming. But you will discover along with Madison Smartt Bell how the movie turned out.
