In
1961, during the heat of the space race, a three-year-old chimpanzee
named Ham rocketed into outer space in Mercury II, pushing the
U.S. one step closer to manned space flight. Ten months later,
five-year-old chimpanzee, Enos, soared into orbit, paving the
way for John Glenn’s momentous journey. The space chimps
received worldwide attention, but once their services were no
longer needed, they faded from the public eye. After years of
service to NASA, the Air Force, and the United States, the colony
of chimps did not receive a hero’s retirement.
Using archival footage and photos of the chimps as well as interviews
with space historians and Ed Dittmer (the trainer/handler for
Ham and Enos), One Small Step reveals the triumphs and
tragedies of the chimps. By mixing in footage of Kennedy’s
famous space race speech and news footage, the historical significance
of the achievements of these chimps is emphasized, ultimately
providing a poignant, and sometimes tragic, of America’s
first astronauts.
