When Thabo Mbeki succeeded Nelson Mandela as the leader of South Africa, no one could imagine the havoc he would wreak on the health care system in his country. Fueled by marginal internet theories, President Mbeki decided HIV was not the cause of AIDS and declared that his country’s health care system act accordingly. Helpful drugs were banned, condoms and other forms of prevention were not funded or systematically opposed. A horrible problem got worse. In the midst of official obtuseness, brave health care officials started to find ways around official sanctions. Made by a former public health care worker, this film chronicles an extraordinary story that is evolving to this day.
