"When I was a high school student in Bowie, MD, I had the good fortune to be at the Hirshhorn Museum one spring night in 1979 for what was billed as 'The Films of Chuck Statler.' To say the night changed my life would feel like an understatement. The films were weird, avant garde and dada before I knew the word. Plus, they were hilarious. I always consider Chuck as the man who invented music video, but he was actually among the last filmmakers of music film clips, an infrequent celluloid marketing tool by record companies, primarily seen in Europe. When the MTV era kicked in, it was all over.
Chuck attended Kent State in Ohio and found kindred spirits with fellow students Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerry Casale, the nucleus for DEVO. Their film collaborations became a hallmark of DEVO's act, and soon Stiff, TwinTone and other upstart record labels commissioned Chuck to produce films for their talent.

And since these films circulated among the midnight movie series so prevalent in the late 70s, it seems only fitting that we re-create that spirit tonight---Highlights of our program include rare film print screenings of Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, Madness, James Chance, City Boy and, of course, DEVO. Also, videos with Pere Ubu, El Vez, Moldy Peaches, the Wipeouters, Stan Ridgway, and the last filmed appearance by Tiny Tim. Plus selections from Chuck's commercial spots, an 'American Splendor' clip light years before the theatrical feature, and selections from his most recent project 'Sonic Burlesque.'

Living and working out of Minneapolis for many years, we are very honored to have Chuck as our guest at the Maryland Film Festival."
