Closing Night
BAADASSSSS! - Mario Van Peebles directs and stars (playing his father, Melvin Van Peebles) in the story of the making of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, the groundbreaking 1971 independent film. Against unbelievable odds, every part of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song reflects its filmmakers’ vision. It was a huge success, ushered in the blaxploitation movement, and lives as one of the unique templates of American movie history. In Baadasssss!, Mario tells one of the greatest stories about independent filmmaking ever told. Mario and Melvin Van Peebles in attendance. Ticket includes admission to the Closing Night Party immediately following the screening in the Festival Tent.

AFGHANISTAN UNVEILED - The first female journalists trained in Afghanistan in more than a decade produced this documentary as part of a groundbreaking training program for Afghan women journalists. It captures the stories of women iin Afghanistan, describing both their lives under the Taliban and their hopes for the future.

THE AGRONOMIST - Academy Award® winning director Jonathan Demme’s latest film is a celebration of the life of Haitian journalist, broadcaster, and human rights activist Jean Dominique. He and his wife Michèle Montas have worked to bring objective media coverage to all of Haiti’s people through Radio Haiti Inter, the oldest radio station in Haiti.

ALBERT ALCALAY: SELF PORTRAITS - A documentary about the life and art of Albert Alcalay, who was introduced to painting while in a concentration camp in Italy during World War II. Alcalay reflects how his life experiences and environment have influenced his art as it has evolved through his time in Europe, his immigration to the U.S., and in his current health difficulties.

ARCHANGEL - Chicago reader film critic (and author of the new book Essential Cinema) Jonathan Rosenbaum has chosen Guy Maddin's tale of obsessive love in the arctic Russian town of Archangel, where Bolsheviks, White Russians and German Huns converge during World War I.

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS - Gillo Pontecorvo’s classic film, which was made in 1965, follows French efforts to control Algeria in the 1950s. Using the immediacy of documentary technique- rough camera work, non actors, real locations- the violence is immediate and complicated.

THE BEST THIEF IN THE WORLD - Director Jacob Kornbluth follows up Haiku Tunnel with his second feature, the story of a young boy who looks to escape the troubles of his own world by breaking into others. Developed at the Sundance Labs and winner of the Maryland Filmmaker's Fellowship.

BIG CITY DICK - A captivating documentary exploring the world of a savant street musician and his lifelong struggle to become a successful recording artist and be loved.

BORN INTO BROTHELS - Documentarians Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski gave the children of prostitutes in Calcutta's red light district photography lessons and cameras. Given a creative outlook, the children's photographs show not only artistic talent, but also expose art as a transforming force.

CHUCK STATLER: MUSIC VIDEO PIONEER - A retrospective program of legendary, ground-breaking filmmaker, Chuck Statler, who is perhaps best known for the cutting-edge music-films he made with DEVO years before the rise of music videos.

CITIZEN KING - Documentary filmmakers Orlando Bagwell and Noland Walker explore the last five years of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. through archival footage, personal recollections, and eyewitness accounts.

CONTAINMENT: LIFE AFTER THREE MILE ISLAND - Twenty-five years ago, America suffered its worst nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, near Middletown, Pennsylvania. Containment covers the accident and the efforts of area residents to keep the unaffected reactor closed.

DEADLINE - After Northwestern University journalism students uncovered evidence that proved that death row inmate Anthony Porter was, in fact, innocent, Republican governor George Ryan launched the legal process to look into the credibility of Illinois' death penalty. Ultimately, Ryan commuted the sentences of 167 criminals on death row to life in prison.

DEAR PILLOW - An ex-porn filmmaker introduces a 17-year-old to the world of writing for porn magazines.

DEATH & TEXAS - Barefoot Bobby Briggs, the greatest wide receiver in pro-football history, sits on death row in Texas, while the Austin Steers get ready to play in the annual Mega Bowl, minus their wide receiver. The Texas Governor has a controversial furlough to consider if he wants his state to win the big game.

DOG DAYS (hosted by John Waters) - During the dog days of Summer in the suburbs of Vienna, six interwoven stories unfold, revealing a world of disillusionment, loneliness and frustration. While the days are lazy and melancholic, spent sunning; the nights stepped in alcohol, sex and song, unleash a fury of violence and raw emotions.

EASY - ...sex is. love isn't. Jamie Harris has been unlucky in love, jumping in bed with one jerk after another. In a matter of when it rains, it pours, she meets not one, but two men who seem to be promising candidates to break her loser streak. Marguerite Moreau gives a stellar performance in this smart and sexy romantic comedy.

THE END - Documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick gave cameras to five families of patients in hospice care in Los Angeles. The result is an intimate, moving, and profound portrait of the end of life.

50/50 (work in progress) - An excerpt from a hybrid of documentary and fiction that examines the issues of medical and reproductive ethics in the age of genetic engineering followed by a discussion. Filmmakers Barry Levinson, Ted Bogosian, and Tom Fontana explore a controversial story by mixing fact and fiction.

FORT TI (in 3D) - Directed by William Castle, the story of the British soldiers' attack on Fort Ticonderoga during the French and Indian War. Makes good use of the 3D effect with spears, muskets, cannons, tomahawks... Also made history as the first film where an actor spits into the audience. One of the highest grossing films of 1953.

HAIR HIGH - A new animated feature from Bill Plympton, about the king and queen of a 1950’s high school, and the new kid who throws a wrench in their social status.

HEIR TO AN EXECUTION - To most people, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are historical symbols of the Cold War and McCarthyism. To director Ivy Meeropol, they are the grandparents she never knew, and in this poignant documentary she works to discover who her grandparents were as people.

HIGH TENSION - Marie and Alex head to the country to stay with Alex's parents and brother to get some studying done before exams. Marie's biggest problem seems to be her unrequited crush on her girlfriend, Alex - that is until an unknown stranger shows up and starts hacking people apart. This bloody, gorey and very stylish slasher film recently received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA.

IMELDA - It's gotta be the shoes. Though the closet full of shoes has become the indelible image of the former first lady of the Phillipines, Ramona Diaz gets beyond the surface in her portrait of one of the richest and most powerful women in the world.

IS IT TRUE WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT ANN? - A work in progress documentary on controversial conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter.

JIM SHERIDAN CONVERSATION - Baltimore Sun film critic Michael Sragow will conduct a conversation with Jim Sheridan, the Oscar® nominate writer-director of such films as My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, and In America. It will feature a look back at his career with clips from his films and questions from the audience.

LET THE CHURCH SAY AMEN - In the big think policy world of national politics, the ongoing debate about faith-based programs seems forced and awkward. While that debate evolves, Director David Peterson and Producer Mridu Chandra have chosen to explore religion at work on the most fundamental street level, as it has been practiced for many years in hundreds of our cities' neighborhoods.

LOVE, SEX & EATING THE BONES - Michael is an aspiring photographer with an extensive collection of pornography. His obsession with these porno films, and buxom star Lisette, becomes an obstacle when he begins a romantic relationship with a real, live woman, Jasmine, an advertising executive still getting over a bad relationship. This sexy romantic comedy won the Audience and Best Feature Awards at the Pan African Film Festival.

METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER - When Metallica went into the studio to record their first album of new material in five years (what would ultimately become St. Anger), they decided to bring in filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky to document the process. What the filmmakers found was a band in turmoil. Given total access, including to the band's group therapy sessions, they present an intimate portrait of the creative and interpersonal issues that affect the most successful heavy metal band in the world.

MONSTER ROAD - A documentary about the wildly fantastic worlds of legendary clay animator, Bruce Bickford, who achieved worldwide cult status after creating dark and magical clay animations for Frank Zappa in the 1970s.

MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND (hosted by Richard Cohen) - Muppet mania returns in this rollicking, musical adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island. Join Kermit-the-Frog, Miss Piggy, Tim Curry as Long John Silver the whole Muppet gang, and on a adventure filled with songs, wacky humor, and hidden treasure.

MY FAVORITE YEAR (hosted by Dan Rodricks) - Benjy Jones (Mark Linn-Baker), one of the junior writers for the television show The Comedy of Cavalcade, is given the task to chaperone the week’s headline guest, a swashbuckling and famously ill-behaved movie star Alan Swann (Peter O’Toole). A tribute to the golden days of live television in the 1950s.

THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD - It is 1933 in Winnipeg in the midst of the Great Depression. Beer Baroness Lady Port-Huntly (Isabella Rossellini) announces a global competition to determine the saddest music in the world and musicians from across the globe pour into town to vie for the whoping $25,000 prize.

SAVED! - Life at American Eagle Christian High, a high school for born again Christians, is good for Mary who is part of the elite Christian Jewels group of senior girls. Then her boyfriend makes a shocking confession that turns her world upside down. Getting conflicting advice from her friends, her mom, the school pastor, and the one bad girl Jewish student at the school makes it difficult for Mary to answer the question, “What would Jesus Do?”

SEDUCING DOCTOR LEWIS - In the small fishing village of Ste. Marie-La Mauderne, the fishing business has all dried up and the entire town is on the dole. The only hope to save the dying town is to lure the new factory to the town to provide much needed jobs. The problem is that the factory requires that the town have a resident doctor, so they set out by all possible means of chicanery to convince a big city doctor to set up residence in the tiny town. Winner of the Audience Award for World Cinema at Sundance and Closing Night of Director's Fortnight at Cannes.

SHOWTIME AT THE HIPPODROME - Academy Award winning director presents a work in progress documentary on Baltimore’s venerable Hippodrome from its vaudeville days to the current renovation.

SKIN DEEP - Anthony is a successful computer engineer in Silicon Valley where he seems to have the perfect life: a beautiful home secluded in the hills, stock options worth millions, and a lovely wife, Victoria. Also, Anthony is black and Victoria is white, which doesn't sit well with Michael, Anthony's best friend since childhood and a surrogate older brother. During lunch, Michael, plays his well-used race card to make Victoria uncomfortable. Despite the rise in tensions, things appear to be going well until one of the women is found dead in the hot tub.

A SLIPPING DOWN LIFE - Based on the novel by Anne Tyler, about a shy young woman in a small town who falls in love with a brooding struggling musician.

SPEAK - Starting your freshman year in high school can be daunting enough, and to make matters worse Melinda Sordino has been labeled a squealer and made an outcast after calling the cops on a drunken end-of-summer party. Melinda retreats into silence as a response with her only outlet being art class taught by the free-spirited Mr. Freeman. Based on the novel by Laurie Halse Anderson.

SPEEDY (silent film with live musical accompaniment by The Alloy Orchestra) - After spending the day with his girl at Coney Island, "Speedy" (Harold Lloyd) rouses an army of elderly neighbors to save the lst horse-drawn trolley from being run out of business. Featuring a cameo by baseball legend Babe Ruth.

THE STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL - An extended family in remote Mongolia makes their livelihood raising sheep and camels. The last camel to give birth in the birthing season, after an extremely difficult delivery rejects her newborn, a rare white calf. The family turns to traditional methods in an effort to get the mother to accept and nurse her young.

SURVIVING SUICIDE: THOSE LEFT BEHIND - The overlooked victims of suicide are the loved ones left behind. Often suffering from guilt, they are nine times more likely to take their own life. Surviving Suicide looks at efforts, led by survivors themselves, to provide assistance to family members and loved ones.

TRAVELLERS AND MAGICIANS - Khyentse Norbu, the writer/director of the internationally acclaimed The Cup, returns with the first feature film to be made in his native country of Bhutan. It's the story of two journeys. A young government official in the present travels to Thimphu with hopes of eventually making it to America. On his way he meets a monk who tells him the story of a young sorceror who upon being transported to a magical land only wishes to return home.

TRAVELING SIDESHOW: SHOCKED AND AMAZED - This documentary—based on and around James Taylor’s book series, Shocked and Amazed On and Off the Midway -- is an effort to preserve Circus and Carnival sideshow history, and pay tribute to the great performers and human oddities of past and present.
