BAADASSSSS!
- Mario Van Peebles directs and stars (playing
his father, Melvin Van Peebles) in the story of the making
of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, the groundbreaking
1971 independent film. Against unbelievable odds, every
part of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song
reflects its filmmakers’ vision. It was a huge success,
ushered in the blaxploitation movement, and lives as one
of the unique templates of American movie history. In Baadasssss!,
Mario tells one of the greatest stories about independent
filmmaking ever told. Mario and Melvin Van Peebles in attendance.

THE
AGRONOMIST - Academy
Award® winning director Jonathan Demme’s latest
film is a celebration of the life of Haitian journalist,
broadcaster, and human rights activist Jean Dominique. He
and his wife Michèle Montas have worked to bring
objective media coverage to all of Haiti’s people
through Radio Haiti Inter, the oldest radio station in Haiti.
ALBERT
ALCALAY: SELF PORTRAITS - A
documentary about the life and art of Albert Alcalay, who
was introduced to painting while in a concentration camp
in Italy during World War II. Alcalay reflects how his life
experiences and environment have influenced his art as it
has evolved through his time in Europe, his immigration
to the U.S., and in his current health difficulties.
ARCHANGEL
- Chicago reader film critic (and author of the new book
Essential Cinema) Jonathan Rosenbaum has chosen Guy
Maddin's tale of obsessive love in the arctic Russian town
of Archangel, where Bolsheviks, White Russians and German
Huns converge during World War I.

CITIZEN
KING - Documentary filmmakers
Orlando Bagwell and Noland Walker explore the last five
years of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. through archival
footage, personal recollections, and eyewitness accounts.
CONTAINMENT:
LIFE AFTER THREE MILE ISLAND -
Twenty-five years ago, America suffered its worst nuclear
accident at Three Mile Island, near Middletown, Pennsylvania.
Containment covers the accident and the efforts of area
residents to keep the unaffected reactor closed.

- After Northwestern University journalism students uncovered
evidence that proved that death row inmate Anthony Porter
was, in fact, innocent, Republican governor George Ryan
launched the legal process to look into the credibility
of Illinois' death penalty. Ultimately, Ryan commuted the
sentences of 167 criminals on death row to life in prison.

PILLOW - An ex-porn filmmaker
introduces a 17-year-old to the world of writing for porn
magazines.

& TEXAS - Barefoot
Bobby Briggs, the greatest wide receiver in pro-football

EXECUTION
- To most people, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
are historical symbols of the Cold War and McCarthyism.
To director Ivy Meeropol, they are the grandparents she
never knew, and in this poignant documentary she works to
discover who her grandparents were as people.
HIGH
TENSION - Marie and Alex head to the
country to stay with Alex's parents and brother to get some
studying done before exams. Marie's biggest problem seems
to be her unrequited crush on her girlfriend, Alex - that
is until an unknown stranger shows up and starts hacking
people apart. This bloody, gorey and very stylish slasher
film recently received an NC-17 rating from the MPAA. |

SOME KIND OF MONSTER - When
Metallica went into the studio to record their first album
of new material in five years (what would ultimately become
St. Anger), they decided to bring in filmmakers Joe Berlinger
and Bruce Sinofsky to document the process. What the filmmakers
found was a band in turmoil. Given total access, including
to the band's group therapy sessions, they present an intimate
portrait of the creative and interpersonal issues that affect
the most successful heavy metal band in the world.

ROAD - A documentary
about the wildly fantastic worlds of legendary clay animator,
Bruce Bickford, who achieved worldwide cult status after
creating dark and magical clay animations for Frank Zappa
in the 1970s.

world and musicians from across the globe pour into town
to vie for the whoping $25,000 prize.
SAVED!
- Life at American Eagle Christian High,
a high school for born again Christians, is good for Mary
who is part of the elite Christian Jewels group of senior
girls. Then her boyfriend makes a shocking confession that
turns her world upside down. Getting conflicting advice
from her friends, her mom, the school pastor, and the one
bad girl Jewish student at the school makes it difficult
for Mary to answer the question, “What would Jesus
Do?”
SEDUCING
DOCTOR LEWIS - In the
small fishing village of Ste. Marie-La Mauderne, the fishing
business has all dried up and the entire town is on the
dole. The only hope to save the dying town is to lure the
new factory to the town to provide much needed jobs. The
problem is that the factory requires that the town have
a resident doctor, so they set out by all possible means
of chicanery to convince a big city doctor to set up residence
in the tiny town. Winner of the Audience Award for World
Cinema at Sundance and Closing Night of Director's Fortnight

a work in progress documentary on Baltimore’s venerable
Hippodrome from its vaudeville days to the current renovation.
SKIN
DEEP - Anthony is a successful
computer engineer in Silicon Valley where he seems to have
the perfect life: a beautiful home secluded in the hills,
stock options worth millions, and a lovely wife, Victoria.
Also, Anthony is black and Victoria is white, which doesn't
sit well with Michael, Anthony's best friend since childhood
and a surrogate older brother. During lunch, Michael, plays
his well-used race card to make Victoria uncomfortable.
Despite the rise in tensions, things appear to be going
well until one of the women is found dead in the hot tub.
A SLIPPING
DOWN LIFE - Based on the novel by Anne Tyler,
about a shy young woman in a small town who falls in love
with a brooding struggling musician.
SPEAK
- Starting your freshman year in high school
can be daunting enough, and to make matters worse Melinda
Sordino has been labeled a squealer and made an outcast
after calling the cops on a drunken end-of-summer party.
Melinda retreats into silence as a response with her only

with his girl at Coney Island, "Speedy" (Harold
Lloyd) rouses an army of elderly neighbors to save the lst
horse-drawn trolley from being run out of business. Featuring
a cameo by baseball legend Babe Ruth.
THE
STORY OF THE WEEPING CAMEL - An
extended family in remote Mongolia makes their livelihood
raising sheep and camels. The last camel to give birth in
the birthing season, after an extremely difficult delivery
rejects her newborn, a rare white calf. The family turns
to traditional methods in an effort to get the mother to
accept and nurse her young.
SURVIVING SUICIDE:
THOSE LEFT BEHIND - The overlooked
victims of suicide are the loved ones left behind. Often
suffering from guilt, they are nine times more likely to
take their own life. Surviving Suicide looks at efforts,
led by survivors themselves, to provide assistance to family
members and loved ones. |
