In 1973, nine college students traveled to
a remote recording studio where they spent a week camping
out and recording nine introspective songs dealing with
their current moods, hopes, and fears. Each of them composed
an original song, and helped out on each others songs. One
of the students shot several rolls of 16mm film to document
their days and nights of friendship, music, and fun. While
returning to campus, they were involved in a tragic accident.
There were no survivors. Their music was thought lost forever,
having only been heard inside the recording studio the week
it was recorded. More than thirty years later, a student
from the same college buys a box of records at a garage
sale, and discovers in the bottom of the box, a master reel
and several cans of unprocessed 16mm film. While piecing
together the origins of the recordings and footage, the
student discovers 30-year-old music that modern-day college
students can relate to, and thanks to the internet, the
music and the story behind it quickly spreads to college
campuses all over the country, resulting in websites and
concerts in tribute to the nine deceased musicians.
Told in the style of a documentary, NOVEM is a narrative
about being young, and the similarities and differences
between young people today and young people thirty years
ago. It is also a film about the power of music and friendship.
The musicians who wrote and performed the soundtrack play
the characters that write and perform the music in the film,
making the creative process seen onscreen all the more realistic.
