The spectacular scenery of the Greek island of Patmos is only one of the things that makes Opa!, a delightful old-fashioned romantic comedy, worth watching. Matthew Modine plays Eric, an American archaeologist who comes to the isle to fulfill his quest of proving the theories of his late father by finding the cup of St. John the Divine. Armed with the latest technology and a single-minded obsession, he is closing in on the location of the sacred artifact.

But Eric soon realizes that life moves differently on Patmos, particularly when he meats Katerina, a strong-willed and fun-loving single mother and owner of the popular local restaurant. As they fall in love they are surrounded by a charming cast of supporting characters from fellow researcher Uncle Monty who would prefer to spend his research funds on a bar tab to the mayor who has dollar (make the Euro) signs in his eyes for the tourists that the find will bring to the island to three Greek widows dressed in black who serves as a (what else) Greek chorus.

In Opa! you may come for the scenery, but you’ll stay for the romance.
