Here is a rare opportunity for an audience
to take part in the creative process of filmmaking. The
filmmakers working on these two unfinished documentary shorts
will be on hand to discuss their films, and more importantly,
to receive valuable audience feedback that has the potential
of influencing the final versions of their films.
Moving Midway
Director: Godfrey Cheshire
DESCRIPTION: Film critic, Godfrey Cheshire, traces the history
of Midway Plantation, a Southern family mansion built in
the 1840's. Over the years, Midway Plantation survived a
home invasion from Sherman's soldiers, the haunting by ghosts
of past residents and visitors, its connection to a time
in American history looked down upon in the public eye,
and the difficulties of maintaining a big old house. In
recent years, Midway has faced its biggest threat: the encroachment
of new housing developments and shopping centers. In tracing
the realities behind the myths regarding Southern plantation
life, Cheshire compares the Hollywood image of the South
to the impressions of real Southerners, and takes on the
subject of race by tracking down an ancestor of a Midway
slave. Framing the story of Midway is the home's latest
chapter: Cheshire's cousin and current Midway resident has
sold the land out from under the house and is moving the
house to a new location.
