AVOID EYE CONTACT
(with Patrick Smith and various filmmakers from Square Footage Films)

Monday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m.

A few years ago, a large handful of New York City animators got together to form Square Footage Films, a collective responsible for the touring program and DVD compilation series, Avoid Eye Contact. Seasoned masters joined with young animators, mixing all manner of styles and techniques, to create a collection of award-winning contemporary animated short films, each with a distinct look. You may not know their names, but you have probably seen their work in commercials, at film festivals, and maybe even in classrooms. Some Avoid Eye Contact participants include Academy Award nominees Bill Plympton and John Dilworth; the legendary George Griffin; industry heavyweights John Schnall, Patrick Smith, and PES; up and coming animators like Mike Overbeck and Jesse Schmal; plus Mo Willems, Fran Krause, Alex Budovsky, Signe Baumane, Christy Karacas, Nina Paley, Chris Conforti, and Rohitash Rao. www.avoideyecontact.com

WAKING LIFE
(Hosted by Bob Sabiston)

Monday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Richard Linklater's WAKING LIFE is an animated feature about a young man in a persistent dreamlike state, who floats in and out of all manner of philosophical discussions. To make WAKING LIFE, Linklater shot and edited digital video footage of real life actors. The edited footage was then given to different artists who were each given one scene to animate using Bob Sabiston's software, Rotoshop. The new software allowed the artists to digitally paint over the digital footage using a technique similar to traditional rotoscoping. Sabiston explains, "WAKING LIFE is not animated in the truest sense of the word. It is a composite of wildly different, re-imagined video scenes drawn in cartoon style." It gives the viewer a lot to look at and a lot to think about. www.wakinglifemovie.com
